"...with the characteristic short muzzle and undershot jaw of its trade or use, which if bred out or allowed to degenerate into other types, the breed would become no longer the mastiff, as they approached nearer in type to their boarhound, bloodhound, or Alpine sheepdog ancestry; foul crosses which have been introduced to the detriment of the true type. Vast dogs long on the legs, somewhat light in bone for their size, are not in reality mastiffs, whatever their owners may think." Wynn
Objectives
We have come across many dogs in our search for the traditional WE of the rural south. The majority of these dogs failed to meet our standards to some degree. What is unfortunate, (and the blame of OWEPS founding members), is that most of these dogs that did not meet OWEPS standards that were not considered or were given away, (many of which we produced), are now being bred by those wishing to profit from our efforts and the breed itself. While these may be fine dogs in their own right, and be perfectly suitable for other breeding programs, we must remember that what may be suitable for some is not the case with others. A WE MUST be and breed true to form and function following the traditional type Farmer's or Shepherd's Mastiff to be accepted by the OWEPS.
We are an exclusive, members only group of breeders dedicated to the preservation of the WE, specifically the Carr White English, a very old and hard to find strain found only in a specific region of middle Georgia. It is our intention to save the rapidly disappearing CWE and it's remarkable rare temperament and physical abilities that make it such a wonderful breed and sets it far apart even from other WE strains. It is the combination of this unique temperament, ability and traditional alaunt phenotype that we are preserving. The preservation of the Carr dogs IS NOT a rebuilding or recreation project, rather, a repopulation program utilizing the few remaining specimens.
It is not our intention to popularize the breed, produce puppies for profit, or to make show dogs out of farm dogs. They never have been a show dog and we plan to keep them that way, strictly a working farm dog. It is our belief that popularizing a breed is most certainly the beginning of the end of what makes a breed so unique. It is the quickest and surest way to destroy a breed. We do not wish to change the WE in any way whatsoever, only to preserve them as they are.
We do not believe in training a bulldog to protect, a trait that should be innate. Nor do we believe in training a bulldog in man or sleeve work. This training is redundant and unnecessary in a properly bred bulldog, that can have tragic results to people, other animals and dogs, and to the dog itself. Quite simply, training a bulldog to protect and to bite a man that has been bred with a natural ability to protect is dangerous. We do not believe that training is a way of harnessing these abilities, rather that protection training destroys these natural abilities. This was also the firm belief of the originator of the American Bulldog, J. D. Johnson, "I strongly advise against protection training these dogs because I feel that they are aggressive and protection oriented enough. The majority of dogs that I have had returned to me over the years have been returned following protection training. I feel that these dogs can be trained from a protection or Schutzhund type standpoint, but I think that the dog trainer must be very highly skilled. These dogs can be extremely ferocious towards any animal and to direct this degree of fury towards a human being is dangerous. I know of no quicker way to ruin one of these dogs than to place him in the hands of a less-than-expert dog trainer who trains him to attack human beings." JDJ He was speaking of the American Bulldog, a breed he developed by using the WE as a foundation. The AB is a more aggressive breed towards animals and other dogs, however, the first AB's were bred as guardians of cattle and property and were never trained to protect. Unfortunately, that has changed in the modern AB.
It is the firm opinion of the OWEPS that Sch/PP should be heavily regulated and monitored; not meant for pets or pet owners, but for law enforcement or military use only. They are trained to attack and release on command. This is an attack dog, not a guard dog that you leave your children with. Stability has to be bred in, it CAN NEVER be taught.
It's a hard struggle informing people of the original function of the WE, not as a hunting dog that requires a breaking stick to release, but a livestock dog that is born with an immaculate on and off switch. This is one of the things that sets the WE apart from all other North American bull breeds, and why they are indeed, "A Breed Apart". You have to see for yourself to fully comprehend this. People who have never seen this are amazed when they do. A light pops on in their heads and they can't believe what they're seeing. It defies everything they've ever known about "bulldogs" because "bulldogs" as the masses know them are NOT WE at all; they are other breeds, apart from the WE.
Our breeders have a strict code of honor and ethics, breeding only true WE. They do not infuse other bulldog types into their dogs. Their litters of pups are consistent in type and temperament time and again. We are proud to be preserving such an extraordinary breed of dog and just as proud of our breeders.
